What you need to know

  1. The AYAD Program places skilled young Australians (18-30) on short-term assignments in developing countries in the Asia Pacific region. It is fully funded by the Aust. Govt’s overseas aid agency, AusAID.

  2. AYAD volunteers work with local counterparts in Host Organisations to achieve sustainable development outcomes through capacity building, skills transfer and institutional strengthening.

  3. Every year, AYAD places 400 young Australians on 3-12 month assignments across Asia Pacific, covering a diverse range of sectors including Education, Environment, Gender, Governance, Health, Infrastructure, Rural Development and Trades.

  4. The AYAD Program has three intakes each year; one in February/March, one in July and one in September/October. AYAD assignments are advertised online at www.ayad.com.au in Jan/Feb for the July Intake, April/May for the Sep/October Intake and Sept/Oct for the Feb/March Intake

  5. The selection criteria are variable depending on the position, but often a tertiary public health or clinical research qualification is important.

  6. The AYAD Program does not discourage partners and families from accompanying AYADs on assignment however the Program is unable to provide support for those dependents.

  7. AYAD volunteers will not be sent to areas of conflict/ danger.

  8. The Program provides support to cover the costs of volunteering overseas including pre-departure medicals, insurance, travel, in-country allowance, and the support of in-country management services.

What you need to know

  1. The Australian Development Gateway is an AUSAID financed project as part of the Aust. Govt’s overseas aid program. Launched in 2004, it is essentially an internet site that supports members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region.

  2. Development Gateways are innovative Internet portals that seek to maximize sharing of development information with the objective of assisting countries achieve sustainable development and to reduce poverty.

  3. The Development Gateway Foundation based in Washington DC was launched by the World Bank and is the hub for a world-wide network of over 50 Country Gateways.

  4. Australia was a founding member and funding contributor of the Development Gateway Foundation and has become the first OECD country to develop its own Country Gateway. The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) is a part of this international initiative

  5. The Australian Development Gateway is a knowledge-sharing website, supporting people working in Asia Pacific countries to reduce poverty and promote sustainability. It is a mechanism for Australians and others in the Asia Pacific region to contribute knowledge and to engage in vigorous discussion.

  6. By accessing the ADG, people working in the field of development are empowered to collaborate more effectively by sharing practical knowledge faster.

  7. They are also further empowered in developing policies and programs, researching issues, forming alliances and working towards sustainable growth and poverty reduction
