Since 1995 Burmese civilians fleeing areas of fighting opposing Burmese ethnic minorities and the army have taken refuge in Thailand. More than 150,000 refugees (Karen, Karenni and Mon) are living in camps along the Thai /Burmese border and this figure is increasing daily. Many left their country years ago and Thailand does not offer them status. Considered as displaced people and having few rights, they rely entirely on international aid to meet their fundamental needs.  The majority of population are Buddhist.

The volunteer must be prepared to work with people from various ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. Although MTC makes an effort to remain apolitical, volunteers should be aware of the political situations both in Burma and Thailand, especially as they relate to the safety of patients and local staff. There are three seasons in Thailand: the hot season, the rainy season, and the cold season – volunteers should be prepared for periods of extreme heat and rain.
