who are we?
We are a network doctors in training (JMOs, registrars, fellows) who work in Sydney Hospitals and share an interest in developing world and global health issues including indigenous health. Most of us have spent periods in developing countries, either with Student International Health Organisations or as volunteers. We share a concern for motivating others to use their skills to serve others in the developing world.
•We founded GHDs in Jan 2008 as a forum for discussion and education in global health issues, and to assist doctors with information + contacts to guide those interested in learning more about working in the developing world.
•We aim to inspire and assist those keen to go work overseas, and show them that it is indeed possible to combine this altruistic work with a successful career in Australia.
•We aim to build a network of like-minded doctors who can provide each other with information, advice & support in regards to work overseas and in Australia
•We aim to show people that there are many options, that volunteer organisations can cater to your individual needs in terms of need to bring a partner, duration of work, disaster relief vs development work, research vs clinical work, level of experience, etc
what are our goals?
global health drinks aims to
•understand the health needs of the global poor
•engage trainees with global health issues
•support trainees seeking to serve abroad
•serve people in need throughout the world
how does ghd work?
We have 2 main activities:
1. Evenings in a Sydney pub
We host GHD evenings every 3rd month at a pub in inner Sydney (central for all hospitals), where we attract 50-80 health workers of all levels of experience - some who have done overseas work several times and others never. We have drinks and food provided for free. We recruit expert speakers from a wide range of specialties (including JMOs) and from NGOs to speak about their experiences, to give advice to those considering work, and to answer questions. We have 2-3 diverse speakers usually based on a theme, and then before and after formal talks we encourage our guests to meet and discuss their own experiences or interests, give each other contacts or advice, and make friends.
2. This Website
We also host a website at www.globalhealthdrinks.org as a resource that we encourage people to access as a source of information about volunteering overseas with different organisations and general advice to those thinking of it. check it out and tell your friends. We also put up photos from events and info on future events and past speakers. We help trainees and new health practitioners to engage with international health, and consider how they can use their unique skills to contribute to the plight of the global poor.
ghd provides a meeting place for Australian doctors who are keen to work in developing countries. Whether through clinical work, public health or research, we aim to encourage Australian doctors to use their skills to serve in developing countries.
We welcome any health professional interested in global health.
